Dr.Jay Narayan Vyas

Jay Narayan Vyas is a distinguished academician, administrator, public life functionary, thinker, and prolific writer. He holds a Civil Engineering degree from M.S. University and a postgraduate degree in the same field from IIT Mumbai. Additionally, he is a graduate in Law, a postgraduate in Management, and holds a Ph.D. in Economics. In recognition of his achievements, he was honored as the Best Alumnus by the Faculty of Technology and Engineering on January 5th, 2013. On the same day, M.S. University of Baroda acknowledged him as one of the 45 Distinguished Alumni for his outstanding contributions to society.

Mr. Vyas has been a prominent thinker in the areas of Public Administration, Economics, and Finance and has served in public life for over 25 years since 1990. His illustrious career includes a significant role in shaping Gujarat’s industrial development between 1975 and 1990 as a policy planner and administrator. As a lawmaker in the Gujarat Assembly for 18 years, he served three terms as a Cabinet Minister.

Among his major contributions, he is especially noted for guiding India’s largest multi-purpose irrigation project, the Sardar Sarovar Dam, as both Chairman and Minister during its most critical phases—a role for which he was honored with the Gold Medal by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) in 2003. As Health Minister, he spearheaded a transformation in Gujarat’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure by planning 12 new medical colleges, significantly expanding postgraduate and super-specialty seats, modernizing government hospitals, and successfully launching the renowned 108 Emergency Medical Service. His leadership also drove notable growth in allied fields like Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Nursing, and Homeopathy, substantially reducing the need for students to seek education outside Gujarat.

An accomplished author, Mr. Vyas has written over 30 books spanning technical subjects, economics, and philosophy. He is frequently invited to speak at prestigious educational institutions and universities across India.
